Can the color of the highlights in your hair be determined by a recessive gene? - hair by myamme

My hair is very dark, probably because of my Cherokee ancestors. But even if my hair is very dark and often shows blond or red if it is regularly exposed to the sun. I know I've had Irish and Scottish ancestry, the red hair and the red gene is recessive. Could the red highlights in her hair came out of recessive genes passed on to me by some of my Celtic ancestors?
